Investing in Our Infrastructure: SAWS is working hard to maintain the 14,000 miles of mains that keep our water flowing. Here is where the focus will be over the next few years:
Major Improvements: A projected $3.2 billion investment is planned over the next five years to upgrade the system.
Facility Upgrades: In 2026, $340 million is going toward fixing up the Steven M. Clouse and Leon Creek Water Recycling Centers.
Power Reliability: To prevent outages as we saw during Winter Storm Uri, $350 million is being used to install generators at primary pumping stations so water pressure stays strong even if the power goes out.
Drought & Conservation
Current Status: Our region is currently facing severe drought conditions similar to the 1950s record.
Fighting Leaks: SAWS has doubled the size of its leak detection team and is using new acoustic technology to find "hidden" leaks underground before they become major problems.
2026 Rate Adjustments: To fund these necessary repairs and grid improvements, rates will see an increase this year. While we have enjoyed reductions in the past for lower usage, rising construction costs and mandated updates mean an adjustment is needed to keep our water system healthy.
Don't Miss the "Winter Averaging" Window. This is the best way to lower your utility bills for the rest of the year. Your sewer fees are calculated based on how much water you use right now (between Nov 15 and Mar 15).
What to do: Turn off your irrigation system during these months.
The Payoff: Lower water use now locks in a lower sewer rate for the entire year.
Check for Leaks
WaterSmart Portal: If you have an automated meter, log in to the portal to check for "continuous flow" alerts. It is a great way to catch a running toilet before it runs up your bill.
Building New? If you are building a home or installing irrigation after Jan 1, 2026, keep in mind that there are new mandatory reviews to ensure efficiency.
Keeping the Neighborhood Tidy
Leaves: As the last of the leaves fall, please help us out by bagging them up. Blowing or sweeping them into the street is against city ordinances and can clog up our drains.
Noise Issues: If noise is keeping you up at night, there is a helpful guide on how to file a Noise Nuisance report HERE.
Safety & Services
Mail Security: We have had reports of mailbox break-ins. District 9 has put together a step-by-step guide on what to do if you are a victim of mail theft. Read the guide HERE.
Library Perks: Did you know you can stream movies and TV shows for free through the San Antonio Public Library? It’s a great perk! Find more info HERE.
